IN REFLECTION

Last week we looked at the account of Jacob wrestling with God as he returned to Canaan to face his brother Esau. Trusting in God leads to transformation by God. You cannot encounter God and not be changed! By God's grace He was changing Jacob's character and gave him a new name - Israel. When we come to God through faith in Christ, we too are changed within and given a new identity in Christ.

PREPARING TO HEAR

**Parental Note** This week we will be dealing with the dark and shocking story of Genesis 34. Due to the graphic nature of the events recounted (rape and genocide), our children's class will be open for those whose kids usually stay in for the sermon. If you are uncomfortable with your children listening to the sermon, please feel free to send them down. As always, I will be discreet, but the text will be read and the story told.

Take a few minutes to pray for our time in the word together, and think through these questions as you read Genesis 34:

  • Consider the reactions of Shechem, Hamor, Jacob, and Jacob's sons to the violation of Dinah. How are they all different?
  • Consider the mutual deception of Hamor/Shechem and Jacob's sons. Are there any "good guys" in this story?
  • What is revealed about Canaanite culture in this story? How might that affect the original readers as they prepared to embark on conquest?
  • How is our reaction to evil and injustice often unbalanced?

PREPARING TO SING

Below are the songs we will singing together on Sunday. Use this as a resource to learn unfamiliar songs, to meditate on Christ-centered truth throughout the week, and teach your children songs that will fill their minds and shape their hearts.
